Momo is pretty much a damsel in distress, but even she has her uses like scanning for hostiles, protecting the YData, or helping her own rescue (in 1 and 2). Jr defeats Albedo on his own in 2 and tries to protect the gang in the beginning of 2 with just pistols. Kosmos saves the day in Ep 1, 2, and even 3. It's the same case with Kosmos in other episodes too. I mean look at Episode 2 where Jr stands in front of her to shield her. Otherwise, many times it was the other cast that does much of the standing up. Where was her worth in being useful? Oh she did the crane game to save Ziggy and Momo? Well, she didn't have to if they just opted to save Ziggy and Momo from the get-go and they had to give something for the protagonist to do other than standing there and look pretty. In retrospect, she's the one who's always getting her butt saved by Kosmos. She never did any actions or anything like that. Cuz if you really think about it, where did Shion do actually anything? All she ever done was interject with some her rather low, uninformed and personal opinions which almost never sways or hold waters, even against the enemies. Which is befitting to her soul's original form as Mary Magdalene's handmaiden (I mean seriously a fucking hand maiden of all things? Is that Japan's answer to the female equivalent of the lowest common denominator or something?). Her role and importance is actually not that splendid or impacting since she's there as mainly as Kosmos' caretaker. Shion is just one of those protagonists that is just along for the ride. Hell, even many of figures out there are mainly Kosmos. Well that doesn't help her case as being the "main heroine" now does it? I guess even Japan doesn't like her if she never shows her pathetic mug ever again. But Shion isn't (except for Namco x Capcom, but that's downplayed when Kosmos is there as well and Shion is thrown in as a dual char with Momo while Kosmos is by herself). Since she pretty much is, due to how she appears on all of the box arts and is cameo'd/crossovered in a lot of games. I rather much play as Kosmos as the main heroine since she is pretty much the focal point of this series. Shion is the main focus because she's your main player character, so it goes without saying.

3 tended to be Kosmos and her story as well. In fact, when I think about it, the fact that she still is a fundamentally good person in spite all she went through is truly a testament to her strength.Īctually she shares her story with Jr at times, like in Episode 1 and 2. But that gives her an amount of nuance and complexity that makes her all the more fascinating to watch-and root for-even when she's being forgetful, reckless, and selfish. It could be argued that she's not really a hero at all. Shion has endured a veritable conga line of trauma, the likes of which is usually reserved to provide context as to how good people can become monsters if life fucks with them enough.īetween the heavy-but-ultimately-vague emphasis placed on Shion's story arc and the sheer amount of horrible shit and PTSD she's experiencing because of it, it's hard to follow her character arc into that of a typical protagonist or Chosen Hero. The defining event for the Hero is often traumatic (a la "I left my hometown for literally 20 minutes, and when I got back it was razed to the ground"), but it usually stops there. From a meta-narrative perspective, this kind of story arc usually applies more to villains or edgy anti-heroes. Story-wise, this is probably because accepting that role means subjecting herself to even more suffering, even if it's on her own terms. She is a protagonist who will not accept that she is one. And even then, it's still not entirely clear to the player why her trauma is so important to the overall plot until the third game, oof. Shion arguably has had multiple instances across the first and second games to realize these things are happening to her for a reason and embrace destiny to find out why, and she dismisses every single one of them because they are all a source of trauma and emotional pain. In a lot of games/stories like this, there are defining events that force the protagonist to realize their Chosen-One status (even if they don't know why they have it) embrace destiny, and go Do The Thing™. At many points in the games, she asks why all these terrible things happen/have happened to her, but instead of taking steps to address those questions, she always diverts her focus to almost anything else (KOS-MOS, usually). One thing about Shion that I've always found interesting is how much she struggles to fit in her role as protagonist, despite being the focal point of the plot. (I've played through all three games, so I'll try to tag any spoilers). I've got many Thoughts about Shion as a character, so I'm super psyched to finally share them Lol.
